In 1887, the 50 members of the Astrographic Congress who met in Paris decided to start mapping the stars with a full-sky camera. Thus was born the project “Carte du Ciel”, which involved 18 observatories scattered over the world. Each of them was assigned an area of sky that had to be photographed by means of a special astrograph telescope of 34 cm aperture, built on the basis of a model developed by the French brothers Paul and Prosper Henry of the Paris Observatory.

This project, the first major example of international collaboration in astronomy, had at the conclusion produced over 22,000 photographic plates, each of which covers an area of 2 × 2 degrees, including a total of two million stars down to the fourteenth magnitude (Fig. 7.22).
